Basic Prenatal by Thorne Research was designed to be a complete vitamin and mineral supplement for pregnant and lactating women. In this multi vitamin and mineral supplement‚ you’ll find the purest and highest quality ingredients available on the market in their most well-absorbed and highly bioavailable forms (so as to reduce the risk of stomach upset).

One of the most crucial vitamins for a healthy pregnancy is folate. Insufficient intake of folic acid during pregnancy may negatively affect fetal development. Fortunately‚ each vegetarian capsule of Basic Prenatal provides the active forms of folic acid (L-5-methyl-tetrahydrofolate and folinic acid) in a balanced 1:1 ratio to help ensure that your body absorbs as much of this crucial vitamin as possible. Iron is also important for pregnant women‚ but it can sometimes cause constipation; therefore‚ this supplement contains iron in the form of picolinate‚ which is easier on the stomach.

Pregnancy and Nutrition

During pregnancy‚ a woman needs more calories and nutrients to support both herself and a growing baby. Even after pregnancy‚ her nutritional and caloric needs remain elevated if she breastfeeds. However‚ some women have trouble getting the appropriate amount of calories and nutrition from food‚ especially during their first trimester of pregnancy when many suffer from morning sickness. The good news is that nutrients like vitamin B6‚ vitamin C‚ and vitamin K may help alleviate those uncomfortable symptoms.

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommend that all women of childbearing age supplement with folic acid. This is because many pregnancies are not discovered until well into the first trimester‚ and this time is crucial for neural development of the fetus. Even though folate is essential‚ it is possible to have too much of a good thing. Experts recommend that your folate intake not exceed 250 percent of the government’s recommended daily value‚ which equates to about 1‚000 micrograms.

The Thorne Research Difference

As you may expect from Thorne Research‚ you will not find any of the additives or coatings that you might find in mainstream prenatal vitamin and mineral supplements. Basic Prenatal is formulated with only the purest and most bioavailable nutrients.

Many women have trouble digesting the high-potency prenatal vitamin and mineral supplements that are often needed during pregnancy‚ especially during the nausea that often occurs in the first trimester. It is for this reason that Thorne Research does not include high volumes of the vitamins and minerals that are more likely to be harsh on the stomach. Basic Prenatal provides the most bioavailable forms of vitamins B6‚ B2‚ folinic acid‚ L-5MTHF‚ adenosylcobalamin and B12—this means that you’ll get more benefit out of a smaller dose than you would with many other multivitamin and mineral supplements.

Thorne Research strives to provide pure‚ high-quality supplements to people looking to enhance their health and well-being. Its products are commonly used in prestigious research studies‚ and are recommended by many doctors and health care practitioners. The company always goes the extra mile to ensure that Thorne Research dietary supplements are safe and effective for immune-compromised‚ allergic‚ and chemically sensitive patients.

Product shipped fast! I've taken Basic Prenatal for the past few days and have noticed more energy than my previous prenatal (promise prenatal). I'm guessing it is the active forms of B vitamins in Basic Prenatal. I like that you take this product 3 times a day, so your body is getting a continuous supply of important vitamins. Product doesn't have a sulfur smell to me, but smells kinda like spaghetti-o's. I'm not pregnant yet, so this may be offensive when morning sickness kicks in. If you're looking for a product that doesn't have a smell to it that is similar in nutrition, try Emerald Labs prenatal. I just ordered Basic Prenatal as well and it smells like ginger and doesn't have a taste to it.
Pros:
3x daily instead of 1/day Active forms of folate and B vitamins
Cons:
Smell and taste

Don't notice a difference

I was looking for a basic multi vitamin. I prefer taking one pill and being set for the day. Taking 3 is a bit much for me so I'm not consistent with Basic Prenatal. I don't feel any different though.

A fine option, and one of few...

This is a terrific prenatal for moms who might have the MTHFR genetic mutation, but also for others as well. I've supplemented with extra cal/mag, along with probiotics and fish oil, since those are a bit lacking, but have been pleased with these vitamins (and their relatively reasonable price). This is one of only two prenatal brands I know of that are suitable for MTHFR moms, and the other is far more expensive (and doesn't seem to offer many additional benefits). I have not experienced any nausea while taking these (other than initial morning sickness, not due to the vites!)
Pros:
Contains correct form of folate and B-12 Only 3 capsules/day Can be mixed with juice if desired
Cons:
Wish there were more herbal ingredients (raspberry leaf, ginger, etc.)

Prenatals
March 6, 2013
Basic Prenatal was recommended by my doctor and I love this. I usually get an upset stomach when I take vitamins so I normally take them at night. I was a little concerned since it recommends you take three times a day, but I took them and I had no problems.

Product works great! I don't get queasy from the prenatals like I did with my first pregnancy, using prescription prenatals. Doesn't "back you up" because of the better iron. Only down fall is you need to take 3 pills per one dose. However, the rewards to feeling good, especially during pregnancy, out weigh the swallowing of 3 pills! But

Thorne Prenatals - champs!
November 19, 2012
Been taking Thorne Prenatal vitamins as soon as I received them (two weeks ago). Love it! I feel more energetic with Basic Prenatal and notice I'm drinking less with caffeine and eating less chocolates. That tells me these Prenatals are working! My urinal color is back to normal, thanks to Thorne! I learned of Basic Prenatal through other mothers with MTHFR mutation genes via BabyCenter online (www.babycenter.com in Mothers with MTHFR TTC group forum). - GoldenSunset
Pros:
Gives me more enegry when other products could not. My urinal colors are back to normal. I am eating less chocolates and drinking less caffeinated products.

Severe Nausea!
May 2, 2012
Basic Prenatal by Thorne caused a tremendous amount of nausea for me every time I took it, regardless of whether it was on a full or empty stomach. I had my mother try it as well and it caused significant nausea for her. I am not sure if it is due to the high iron content, or what exactly it is about this vitamin that caused the problem, but I ended up switching to Flintstones vitamins for kids and have had no problems since. I will not be purchasing this vitamin again, and do not recommend it for this reason.
Cons:
causes severe nausea

This brand was recommended to me by a friend who is a nutritionist, I have been taking Basic Prenatal 3 times a day for about 3 weeks now and I feel good. I am a little bit sensitive when it comes to taking pills so I make sure that I take them with a full meal.
Cons:

Non-Stomach Upsetting
June 8, 2011
I have had problems in the past with multi-vitamins upsetting my stomach. When I wanted to start taking a prenatal, my naturopath recommended these, and they have never upset my stomach. Also, it has enough folate that I do not have to use the prescription my doctor gave me. I am extremely happy with these.
Pros:
Non-stomach upsetting High level of folate

Quality prenatal
January 21, 2011
I've been using these a few months and they seem to work fine. Only drawback is having to take 3 vitamins as one serving. Like that it doesn't have magnesium stearate which I've been told is not healthy for your stomach as it builds up in the lining and can cause health problems.

Pure and natural prenatal vitamins
January 5, 2011
I went to a class at a natural health facility. The doctor there told me she took these vitamins for her pregnancy. She said that since they are capsules, they absorb in the body better than the tablets that are sold in stores. I decided I would give them a try and I have used them for my first pregnancy and now using them for my second. They are great vitamins and worth the price.
Pros:
they are capsules.
Cons:
I don't like that you have to take 3/day.
