Got giardia? Try berberine by Vital Nutrients!
May 13, 2011
I found out about using berberine to treat intestinal parasites by researching online and in health books. I have had giardia several times, and before I always struggled through the 'cure' using an Rx for Flagyl. Flagyl, a very strong antibiotic, is not recommenede for repeated usage, plus I don't tolerate it very well. Plus using it always leaves me with a yeast infection, a very nasty side effect. So I decided on my own after acquiring giardia in Honduras in April '11 to try using Berberine, which also kills yeasts and is reported to be easier on the digestive system than Flagyl. This product was slightly confusing to determine a dose, as most of the studies I'd read were using Berberine Hydrochloride, and this is Berberine sulphate. But after carefully rereading, I realized that these capsules contain 200 mg of Berberine, and that that is the crucial thing...not which chemical source it is derived from. I initially used 2 capsules twice a day with breakfast and dinner, as I weigh 150 lbs., and my infection was quite severe by the time I received this formula. After 4 days, I began experiencing what I thought were side effects of taking the berberine, and as the giardia symptoms were no longer present, I reduced the dose by half, still dosing twice a day with meals, and continued at the reduced dosage for another 4 days. It has now been two days since I stopped the treatment, and I am still symptom free, and am able to eat more normally with improving digestion. And no sign of yeast infection.
Pros:It's an herbal alternative to Flagyl.
Side effects were mild compared to Flagyl, and I was able to alieviate them by reducing the dose.
It improved my symptoms greatly after taking it for only one day, and I had multiple severe symptoms.
Capsules were clean without much bitter taste.
It's available without Rx.
Price was very reasonable.
Delivery was very prompt.
Cons:I did experience some side effects...difficulty digesting small meals, especially dinner; a feeling of fullness and bloating; mild dizziness.
