Cal-Mag Citrate by Thorne Research is an effervescent powder form of calcium-magnesium that is easy to consume. The powder reacts when it has been comined with water to result in citrate, gylcinate and ascorbate minerals that are well-absorbed by the body. The powder version was designed to provide more calcium to the body than one would get from a capsule or tablet. Cal-Mag Citrate provides a convenient way for you to supplement with high amounts of calcium and magnesium. Thorne Research also added vitamin C to this mineral supplement, giving it added antioxidant benefits.

Because citric acid is effervescent, it heightens the bioavailability of citrate mineral chelates. This mineral and vitamin product provides 200 milligrams of magnesium along with 500 milligrams of calcium per scoop. Thorne devised it this way because this ratio is especially beneficial for those who require higher levels of calcium, but cannot tolerate equal amounts of magnesium. Magnesium has been known to have laxative-like qualities, which make it difficult for some to use as a supplement. The single-serving scoop also offers 500 milligrams of vitamin C and 500 milligrams of glycline, a non-essential amino acid.

How to Use Cal-Mag by Thorne Research

Place the desired amount of powder into a glass with a small amount of water. Let it sit for a moment, so it can effervesce. Once it stops bubbling, consume the solution directly, or mix it with your favorite fruit juice. This will get you a glass that is chock-full of calcium and magnesium chelates that include citrates, glycinates and ascorbates.

The Importance of Calcium and Magnesium

Both calcium and magnesium are essential for your body to function properly. In fact, anthropological evidence suggests that early humans consumed vast amounts of calcium until the early days of agriculture, which occurred about 10,000 years ago. Today, our calcium intake is estimated at about one-quarter to one-third the intake of our evolutionary ancestors, which could indicate that we are not consuming enough calcium through our diets. Recently, researchers analyzed many previously conducted studies on calcium and bone mass to determine what our optimal intake should really be. The conclusion that researchers came to was that 500 to 1,500 milligrams of well-absorbed calcium can be taken daily to promote healthy bone mass in young adults, adolescents, postmenopausal women and older men.

You can find magnesium in every single cell of the body. It plays a role in more than 300 enzymatic processes and is essential for energy production. Your body needs magnesium to maintain a healthy bone density, normal heart rhythm and pulmonary function, and maintain normal blood glucose levels. Magnesium is also involved in nerve conduction, conversion of pyridoxine to an active form of vitamin B6 (peridoxal 5’-phosphate), muscle contraction, energy production and methyl-group transfer.

Ratio of Calcium and Magnesium

Not only is it crucial to get enough calcium and magnesium daily, it is also important to get them both in an adequate ratio. Experts do not agree on the exact ratio necessary, but many support a 2 to 1 ratio (being two times calcium than magnesium), while others recommend a 1 to 1 ratio.

Good for Osteoporosis!
By Pat from New Orleans, Louisiana on February 15, 2012
A friend of mine turned me on to Cal-Mag Citrate (Effervescent Powder). She'd had severe osteoporosis and her now ex-doctor had her on Fossamax, which is very hard on your body. When her jaw started to deteriorate, she switched doctors and the new doctor told her about Thorne's calcium-magnesium citrate. After a year, her osteoporosis was gone and her bone density scans showed that her bones were healthy again.
Pros:
Good product, effective
Cons:
Have to order it online

I would recommend this item to a friend.

Tastes like cabonated pee
By Jayna from Springville, UT on January 20, 2012
If you want to know what it's like to drink a baking soda volcano Cal-Mag Citrate (Effervescent Powder) is the stuff for you. While I don't doubt the quality of Cal-Mag Citrate (Effervescent Powder) I just can't stand the taste. I prefer using pure encapsulations cal/mag with cofactors. You spend a little more but it has a milder, sweet taste. Plus it includes vitamin D3.
Pros:
High quality
Powder form
Highly absorbable
Cons:
The taste

A Good nite's sleep
By Don Ford from Everett, WA on May 2, 2011
The tingling/burning sensation associated w/ diabetic neuropathy in my feet had been compromising quality sleep for months and I had found no relief from 'traditional' medicines. My wife's nutritionist recommended Cal-Mag Citrate (effervescent powder): it works like a charm. Gone are the nite tingling/burning sensations in my feet and I now sleep like a bear in hibernation.
Pros:
It works!!!!!!!!
Cons:
This is not really a dislike, but I do dream like crazy, something I was prevented from doing since I was unable to get into REM sleep BEFORE taking Cal-Mag citrate.

I would recommend this item to a friend.

Cal Mag Citrate
By Karen from Delray Beach, FL on January 21, 2011
My chiropractow recommeded this to me. I had osteopenia. Now my dexa scans are ok. I also take a high dose of vitamin D.
I like this product because it is effervescent and doesn't have to be mixed. It is much faster to take and not like a pill that may not absorb as easily.

I would recommend this item to a friend.

It works!
By Betty from Washington state on January 11, 2011
My naturopath gave me this product to try originally, and when I ran out I found it online. I take all my Cal-Mag by supplement, because there's no dairy in my diet. When I added this product at bedtime I stopped having muscle cramps in my sleep. Now I'm giving it to my adult son also.
Pros:
Easy, quick to consume. Effective (see my review).
Cons:
No problems at all.

I would recommend this item to a friend.

A great product
By Elaine from Kailua Kona, Hawaii on December 24, 2010
This is a great item if you hate to swallow pills and as it has the magnesium too I can also eliminate taking a pill for that. I mix it with orange juice. It is quite a bit cheaper than at my naturopathic's office and I received it quite quickly.

This really does make a difference!
By Connie from Fort Wayne, Indiana on December 15, 2010
This was recommended for me several years ago after consulting a nutritionist during my breast cancer treatment. I took it, but not faithfully because it was all I could do to drink it when I mixed it with water. THEN, I found that when I mix it with my orange juice it's not only "not bad"... it's Really good!! And I feel better in general now that it is honestly an every morning supplement for me,and I look forward to starting my day with it!!
Pros:
The effervessance in the juice, the way I can feel an overall difference in the delivery of it as opposed to taking capsules.
Cons:
Nothing
