Elderfower (Sambucus nigra) – Traditionally used for the phy-
tochemicals that have antiviral properties specifcally related
to the respiratory system. Herbalists also consider Elderfower
to encourage mucous excretion. It may be effective in reducing
mucous membrane infammation, reducing fever and supporting
immunity with colds and fu.
Eyebright (Euphrasia offncinalis) – Traditional therapeutic uses
include eye conditions with redness and irritation, infammation,
nasal catarrh with profuse watery fow, chronic sneezing and hay
fever.
Hyssop (Hyssopus offcinalis) – Was used by the ancient Greeks
to ease bronchitis and other respiratory infammation. It has
been shown that the plant’s essential oil appears to break up
phlegm and soothe irritated mucous membranes in the respira-
tory tract as well as having antiviral properties.
Purple Conefower (Echinaeca angustifolia root) – Has been
used traditionally for suppressed or imbalanced immunity,
including allergies, infammatory conditions, respiratory tract
infections and urinary tract infections.
Goldenseal Root (Hydrastis canadensis) – Goldenseal contains
the phytochemicals berberine and hydrastine. These compo-
nents give Goldenseal an antimicrobial effect that is antibiotic,
antiseptic, antifungal, antiparasitic and antiviral. Goldenseal
was also traditionally considered to support catarrhal states of
the mucous membranes.
