PRODUCT DISCUSSION
Reduced glutathione is a powerful substance in the body that has regulatory and antioxidant roles. Scientific studies have shown that strenuous exercise may lead to increased imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant defenses in the body. PhysioLogics Reduced L-Glutathione acts as an antioxidant to help maintain oxidant homeostasis in the body.


STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
Glutathione is a peptide made up of three amino acids; glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine. It is an important intracellular antioxidant that can protect cells, including muscle cells, from oxidative stress. Reduced glutathione donates an electron to reactive oxygen species and other free radicals. The oxidized product is then reduced again by glutathione reductase. Glutathione is also a co-factor for a powerful enzymatic antioxidant in the cells called glutathione peroxidase.


CLINICAL EVIDENCE
A study comparing 30 subjects with significantly elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) to a control group evaluated levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) and glutathione dependent enzymes. These subjects had significantly lower serum levels of reduced glutathione (p<0.05), and significantly higher levels of glutathione s-transferase (p<0.05) activity compared to controls. This was attributed to the use of gluthathione in reactions catalyzed by GST, such as those addressing free radicals and reactive oxygen species. The authors suggest an increased requirement for glutathione in times of oxidative stress, thus supporting glutathione's role as an antioxidant in the body. (Scibior et al, 2008)


In a lab test performed in Japan, human cells were exposed to oxidative stress. The addition of endogenous glutathione significantly neutralized the negative effects from oxidative stress on the cell (p<0.01). This study suggests a role for glutathione for the protection of the body's cells from oxidative stress. (Nakamura et al, 2008)
