STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION

L-Lysine is an essential amino acid that is used for the production of collagen and tissue maintenance in the skin. It also plays an important role in supporting immune system function.


CLINICAL EVIDENCE
Lysine has been shown to play a role in collagen crosslinking. The enzymatic hydroxylation of lysine residues in collagen protein is required for the stabilization and orderly formation of collagen in the body, a necessary step in the formation of healthy connective tissue. (Robins, 2008)


A review article reports favorable results from studies examining the effect of lysine supplementation on skin health. Proposed mechanisms by which lysine may help support skin health are increasing the lysine/arginine ratio in the body or possibly increasing immune response by improving protein nutrition.
