Lactobacillus acidophilus – This type of probiotic belongs to a group of bacteria that normally occupies the small intestine and vagina. Lactobacillus acidophilus a type of bacteria that is commonly used in probiotic supplements because it has been shown to help maintain a healthy intestinal tract and aid in digestion. You can also get lactobacillus acidophilus in yogurts and fermented soy products, such as tempeh and miso.

Because it is such a commonly used probiotic, L. acidophilus has been tested in many human trials. The results have shown that it is effective when used as a treatment for bacterial vaginosis (a common vaginal infection). It is also often used as part of a complete therapy for various gastrointestinal disorders.

Lactobacillus paracasei – L. paracasei is a probiotic strain that is commonly found in the body’s oral and rectal mucosa. It is present in some infant formulas and is used to treat diarrhea in infants. There are some cases that have shown L. paracasei to be effective in treating pollen allergies, but more research must be done on this topic. Lactobacillus paracasei may also be helpful in treating some symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome. This probiotic strain can be found in dairy products including yogurt and kefir.

Bifidobacterium bifidum – This probiotic is just one member of the popular bifidobacterium family that is believed to only exist in humans. It has been used to help restore the natural balance of intestinal flora after it has been upset by overuse of antibiotics or stomach conditions. With a natural balance of intestinal bacteria, you are less likely to suffer from chronic diarrhea, bacterial infections and issues of malabsorption.

Bifidobacterium lactis – B. lactis is a very powerful transient bacterium. Some studies have shown that Bifidobacterium can improve digestion, lower cholesterol and improve immune system function. You can find Bifidobacterium lactis in raw milk, cottage cheese, buttermilk, and it is even present in certain plants.

Lactobacillus plantarum – L. plantarum is a beneficial bacteria that is often found in Korean kimchi, cultured vegetables, sauerkraut and human saliva. Lactobacillus plantarum lives in your gut and keeps harmful microorganisms from taking over and causing discomfort of disease. Along with other probioitcs, lactobacillus plantarum forms a barrier at the intestinal wall to stop dangerous bacteria from breaking through the gut and entering the blood stream.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus – L. rhamnosus is another probiotic that exists naturally in the body, usually in the intestines. Like the other probiotics, it helps maintain an adequate balance of the good bacteria while crowding out the harmful bacteria. It is often used to treat or prevent diarrhea caused by rotavirus in children, but it is also effective against “traveler’s diarrhea.”
