Phytoprofen by Thorne Research delivers botanical extracts to help support the body’s natural inflammatory response. This improved supplement now contains the well-absorbed Meriva curcumin phytosome. What is Phytoprofen?

Phytoprofen is made up of a combination of various botanicals, which includes a synergistic blend of the Ayurvedic herbs Picrorhiza, curcumin (derived from turmeric) and Boswellia. Each of these herbs helps to support the body’s normal inflammatory response.

Meriva – a curcumin phytosome, has demonstrated extreme bioavailability when compared to standard curcumin. Studies have shown that it is absorbed by and taken up by the liver in significantly greater amounts. In fact, a 2007 study published in the journal, Cancer and Chemotherapy Pharmacology, indicated a significantly greater plasma concentration time curve (5 times higher for Meriva) than ordinary curcumin. Levels of curcumin in the liver were also higher when subjects supplemented with Meriva. Another study in humans has demonstrated even greater bioavailability of Meriva – again, showing increased absorption when compared to dosing with ordinary curcumin.

Picrorhiza – This Ayurvedic herb has been used for centuries as treatment for yellowed skin and liver infections caused by a virus (such as acute viral hepatitis). Picrorhiza is also used to treat allergies, asthma, fever and certain skin conditions, such as eczema and vitiligo (a condition that results in white patches on the skin). Less common uses for the herb include the treatment of constipation, chronic diarrhea and indigestion. Sometimes picrorhiza is used in combination with other herbs to treat epilepsy, rheumatoid arthritis, infections, malaria and scorpion stings.

Boswellia – Boswellia has also been used for ages in Ayurvedic medicine. More research should be done on the herb, but it has shown promise in some studies as treatment for asthma and other conditions that involve inflammation. Boswellia is also believed to be effective against depression, when used as incense. The bark of the Boswellia tree is commonly used in West Africa to treat gastrointestinal problems, rheumatism and high fevers.

In addition to these botanicals, Thorne Research has added bromelain, which is a protein-digesting enzyme complex that comes from pineapple. Numerous studies have shown that bromelain can help reduce bruising after sustaining any type of bodily injury. Other studies have shown that supplementing with bromelain can reduce swelling and tenderness when it is taken after sustaining blunt injuries to the musculoskeletal system.

All of the botanical extracts that are included in Phytoprofen are believed to have the ability to reduce post-operative bruising and swelling in addition to inhibiting swelling and bruising that can come from bodily injury.
