What is Quercetin?

Quercetin is the most abundant of the flavonoid, and it is commonly found amongst members of the plant kingdom. Quercetin is believed to decrease inflammation by inhibiting key enzymes that produce inflammatory mediators. This may be why the flavonoid is being studied for its role in cancer prevention. It is also why quercetin is sometimes used for pain relief, similar to how one would use aspirin.

Some holistic practitioners use quercetin to counter allergic reactions because it inhibits the enzymes that are responsible for producing inflammatory mediators. So, for the same reason it may work to relieve pain, it may also work to reduce allergy symptoms. Another reason it is used to treat allergies is because it inhibits histamine production.

Many people with diabetes have used quercetin to alleviate or treat some of the complications that come along with the disease, such as cataracts, neuropathy and glaucoma. In animal studies, aldose reductase inhibitors, such as quercetin, have been shown to reduce neurological and kidney-related symptoms that present themselves in cases of diabetes.

QQuercetin has also been studied for its heart-healthy impact. One study showed that elderly men who were taking high doses of quercetin and other flavonoids experienced lower rates of heart attack.
