Understanding Thyroid Function

The thyroid is an endocrine gland that consists of many follicles. Each follicle contains thyroglobulin, which is an iodine-containing protein that helps form thyroxine. As one of the main hormones secreted by the thyroid gland, thyroxine is important because it enhances the capability of all foods to be broken down into energy, and it also increases the protein synthesis rate within most tissues. Follicles within the thyroid also secrete a hormone called calcitonin, which helps inhibit bone re-absorption.
