Formula Changes for Vitamin B12 1000mcg and Vitamin B12/Folate

Vital Nutrients Vitamin B12 1000mcg and Vitamin B12/Folate formulas were revised to include new forms of the active ingredients. The potencies of each nutrient remain the same, but the sources of the nutrients have changed.

Vitamin B12/Folate now contains the (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid, or L-5MTHF, form of the nutrient. The L-MTHF form of folate is the predominantly occurring form in nature. L-MTHF is a stable form of folate and studies suggest that the supplement is at least as effective as folic acid in increasing plasma folate concentrations. Research also indicates that supplementation with L-MTHF, as opposed to folic acid, may create less potential to mask the symptoms of a B12 deficiency and may be less prone to pharmaceutical interactions.

Due to FDA requirements regarding analytical method validity, Vital Nutrients has revised both Vitamin B12 1000mcg and Vitamin B12/Folate to utilize the cyanocobalamin form of vitamin B12 in place of methylcobalamin. The FDA has deemed the methods of identity verification and quantitative analysis for methylcobalamin in finished product matrices as insufficient and not scientifically valid. Since the FDA GMP regulations require that “the tests and examinations that you use to determine whether the specifications are met are appropriate, scientifically valid methods,” we are unable to include methylcobalamin in our formulas at this time. Vital Nutrients is currently working with leading U.S. laboratories to develop a method that meets the FDA criteria as being accurate, precise, and specific. We hope to have a method available soon and will return to using methylcobalamin in our formulas at that time.
