One of the better whey proteins I've tried
October 6, 2012
I do a high level of physical activity on a daily basis and I'm not a big eater. I like the convenience of a good quality meal-replacement shake to make sure I get enough protein each day. Whey Guard Repair Chocolate makes a difference! Whey Guard Repair is a tasty, high-quality whey protein supplement. I like the fact that it is a whey "concentrate" rather than a whey "isolate". According to the latest nutritional research I've read, protein "concentrates" are preferable to "isolates" because they are a whole food complete with all the necessary cofactors and supporting nutrients, while "isolates" are a fractionated food, which, because they are stripped of their naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and fats, can be difficult for the body to digest and assimilate. This product mixes well in liquid (I use whole milk) and has a nice smooth texture, thanks to the added "good" fats. The only drawback that I noticed is that it has a very slight aftertaste. Thankfully it doesn't linger. I suspect it may be the one of the sweeteners (monk fruit?), or possibly the OPC's or quercetin they've added to boost the nutrient content~ I imagine either of those ingredients might be pretty bitter on their own. In any case, the taste is quite good compared to many powders I've tried.
Pros:A minimally- processed protein "concentrate"
Good range of nutrients
No artificial flavorings or sweeteners
No stevia (which I typically find too sweet and can give an unpleasant aftertaste)
Cons:A very slight aftertaste which fortunately does not linger
It would be an added bonus to know the source of the whey (i.e., grass-fed cows? Domestic? New Zealand? Other?)
