It only takes one capsule of Optimox Corporation’s Iodoral to get a total daily intake of elemental iodine that is similar to the average intake of people living in mainland Japan. The diet in Japan is much richer in iodine than in many other countries. This is due to the larger quantities of sea vegetables that are consumed on a regular basis. This same population also has very low rates of fibrocystic breast disease and breast cancer when compared with the rest of the world.

What is Iodine?

Iodine is one of the essential elements that our body needs to function. Its main role is to support thyroid function, but other organs also need iodine in order to function optimally.

In the early part of the last century, an iodine solution called Lugol was often used to treat decreased and excessive activity of the thyroid. At the time, patients were taking the equivalent of 12.5 to 37.5 milligrams of iodide. One tablet of Optimox’s Iodoral contains 12.5 milligrams of combined iodide and iodine.

Link Between Iodine and Breast Health

Various studies on both animals and humans have shown a link between low iodine levels and fibrocystic breast disease. It has been established that the minimum amount of iodine needed to prevent such disease is very small – as low as 0.1 milligrams per kilogram of body weight each day.

Recently, there has been very convincing evidence emerging that links inadequate iodine levels with breast cancer. In the past, one slice of bread contained about 0.15 milligrams of iodine, a full daily dose, but in recent years, bromine has replaced the iodine, increasing the need for supplementation. Not only did the bromine displace much of the iodine in bread, but studies show that it may also block the anticancer capabilities of the remaining iodine. Before this change was made, a woman’s risk for getting breast cancer was 1 in 20. Now, it’s 1 in 8 and increasing at a rate of 1% per year.

If you reference the RDA values of vitamins and minerals before making choices about nutrition or supplementation, you should know that these values were established many years ago – just after World War II. Iodine was among the last elements to be included in the RDA system and its value was based on the amount needed to prevent goiters, mental decline and hypothyroidism. This system does not address optimal levels. It simply addresses the levels needed to avoid extreme deficiency-related illness.

Based on the best available research, the Optimox Corporation suggests a minimum iodine and iodide intake of 12.5 milligrams, which is also similar to the average intake of Japanese women who have much lower rates of breast cancer and fibrocystic breast disease. This quantity is also the dosage in a single Iodoral capsule.
